Rehman Malik wasn't that lucky as he had to leave the country when Farooq Lehgari toppled the Benazir government. Then Rehman Malik played an instrumental role at two fronts. First he helped Zardari a lot to launder the looted money and invest and secure it at different places in the world while washing all the leads. Secondly he acted as a bridge between FBI and the leadership of PPP.
Rehman Malik was more closed to Asif Ali Zardari from the onset. He knows all the the origins and destinations of the plundered money which goes into high billions and he is the eye-witness and privy to so many secrets. He cannot be brushed away, and he cannot be ignored.
He is the most powerful man in the Pakistan People's Party and even Zardari talks to him on issues in private. The way Rehman Malik acted after the failed attempt of extending the by-elections is in front of everyone. The callous, aloof, and stubborn attitude of Rehman Malik tells many stories about the authority hierarchy in the PPP.
It's wrong that Rehman Malik is any friend or sympathy-monger towards the Pervez Musharraf. He does what he is told to do by the masters in Washington. That is why he is in London making sure that Zardari doesn't budge or puke or defect.

Rehman emerged as the 'deal broker' in Benazir-Musharraf reconciliation talks in Abu Dhabi in July 2007, and replaced Makhdoom Amin Fahim as the most trusted political lieutenant of Benazir Bhutto. Fahim was Benazir's aide since 2002, when he formed the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians and acted as the leader of PPP in the absence of Benazir and her husband Asif Ali Zardari. It was also reported in The News that after Rehman Malik took over the role of top "adviser and broker" of Benazir on important matters ranging from politics to business, Fahim seemed to have become an "obsolete political commodity."Β]

Because of the nature of the job, all the would-be ministers declined to take up the Interior ministry, (Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, the previous Interior Minister, had been targeted twice by suicide bombers), and hence Rehman Malik was the actual Interior Minister.

ISLAMABAD: DG ISI Lt-Gen Nadeem Taj in his first political assignment after becoming the head of the supreme spy agency has received Rehman Malik at his office to discuss the role of those three suspected "assassins" whose names were mentioned by Benazir Bhutto in her letter to Gen Musharraf.
Rehman Malik, who returned to Pakistan only last week after spending several years out of the country fearing persecution by government agencies, is now being given extraordinary protocol in Islamabad amid fast changing political realities.
Ironically, the same man who at one point was being hounded by the tough guys of the secret agencies to force him to turn approver against Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari, is now being protected as he gets busy in holding secret meetings with the top military and civilian aides of General Musharraf to decide the destiny of this country.
He discussed with the top guns of the regime, besides other things, the issue of Benazir Bhutto's security after she came under attack in Karachi. He also discussed the names of prime ministerial hopefuls and ministers for the caretaker setup that would be put in place after November 15. Malik is here in connection with chalking out a comprehensive security plan with ISI for Benazir Bhutto.
Earlier, Rehman Malik was taken aback when he was given extraordinary protocol at the Islamabad airport. He found dozens of top security and protocol officers receiving him inside the plane. A bulletproof car was specially parked close to the plane and he was taken out of the Islamabad airport amid tight security, which is not even available to the federal ministers.
Rehman Malik who is widely known and respected for his hospitality and polite behavior is said to be dealing with all these important issues concerning Benazir Bhutto after her return to Pakistan. Although, another widely respected leader of PPP Amin Fahim too can be seen with Rehman Malik most of the time but every body within the PPPP circles and the government camp knows that he is the man they can have business with. His expensive house in London at the Edgware Road has almost become an unannounced international secretariat of the PPP for holding regular meetings to avoid huge expenditures on such meetings at any hotel in London.
A close friend of Tariq Aziz, Rehman Malik developed personal friendship with the would-be army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Keyani and Lt General ® Hamid Javed when they frequently visited London and Dubai to meet Benazir Bhutto in August and September. Benazir still continues to use the time-tested skills of Rehman Malik to deal with the same team of General Musharraf in Pakistan to ensure positive results of the ongoing talks.
Talking to The News, Rehman Malik confirmed his meeting with DG ISI, but refused to comment on the nature of his talks. On the issue of extraordinary security provided to him by the government, Malik said, "they had some concerns about my security and they acted on their own."

But the way Rehman Malik behaved on two occasions in Karachi and then again in Rawalpindi where Benazir got killed is really mysterious. Rehman malik was accompanying Benazir in Rawalpindi but in a separate vehicle.
Why was he not with Benazir Bhutto in her vehicle ? as her security chief. Because she stopped believing her after the Karachi bomb blast.
After Benazir Bhutto's assassination he never had any thing to say except BS.
